High Flying HF-PICOW - Raspberry PI RP2040 based microcontroller board with WiFi/BLE modules

2024-02-22

HF-PICOW from High-Flying is a Raspberry PI RP2040 based microcontroller board with HF-LPT270 (802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0) wireless communication module. RP2040 is a dual-core ARM Cortex M0+ microcontroller with 133 MHz clock frequency, having 264 kB SRAM, QSPI controller and 30 GPIO ports, most of which have been brought out to the edges of the board, which gives a multitude of possibilities for connecting various devices. The board has been equipped with 2MB QSPI Flash memory and all essential external components for proper microcontroller functioning (oscillator, power circuits, Micro USB connector), and also a BOOTSEL button. Communication with the HF-LPT270 module is carried out through the RP2040 microcontroller UART interface. The board can be mounted through the 0.1” pitch pin connector (not included) and in this form it resembles a standard DIP-40 integrated circuit housing, but it also can be used as a SMT module.
The HF-PICOW board is available in 2 versions:

  • HF-PICOW-1: with built-in PCB antenna – it is a compact solution, which integrates antenna without the need to use additional external elements. It makes the integration easier in various kinds of electronic devices, because it does not require much space on PCB, which is particularly important in case of projects where space is limited.
  • HF-PICOW-0: with IPEX connector for connecting external antenna. IPEX connector, known also as u.fl or IPX, is a standard connector used for connecting external antennas to PCB. It is a small and compact connector, which allows easy connection and disconnection of antenna, this is particularly useful during testing various antenna configurations or changing antenna when required. Users can choose appropriate antenna for their needs, having regard to such factors as range, directionality, radiation characteristics, interference resistance etc.

RP2040 microcontroller is a unit which gained popularity due to its efficiency, flexibility and affordable price. It is a dual-core microcontroller equipped with ARM Cortex M0+ cores, which provide fast and effective work. Thanks to that, it is an ideal solution for various kinds of applications, from simple DIY projects to more advanced IoT (Internet of Things) applications. Additionally, open source software and rich documentation makes it easy to use even for beginner programmers.

QFN-56 (Quad Flat No-leads) is a type of semiconductor housing which is popular in case of microcontrollers, due to its compact form and low profile. It has 56 pins, which enables connection to various external components, such as sensors, displays or communication interfaces.
