SMBJ Transil Diodes are components that protect electronics from sudden high voltages, which may occur, for example, during electrostatic discharges (ESD), power surges, or other disturbances. They are called TVS diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressors) because they "suppress" short voltage spikes.

Operation:

Under normal conditions, a TVS diode does not affect the circuit’s operation — it allows signals or power to pass through without obstruction. However, when the voltage rises above a certain threshold (breakdown voltage), the diode quickly conducts, diverting excess energy to ground and thus protecting sensitive components. Once the impulse passes, the diode returns to its non-conducting state and everything continues to operate normally.

• SMBJ18A and SMBJ24A are unidirectional diodes that protect against surges in one voltage polarity (useful where the voltage polarity in the line is known).
• SMBJ18CA is a bidirectional diode, protecting against surges regardless of voltage polarity (useful in lines where both positive and negative voltages can occur).
