The Big Four save a classic - ULN2803 in SOP18 is back in the game!
ULN2803 - a classic Darlington driver that still powers electronics
The ULN2803 is an eight-channel Darlington transistor driver designed to work with microcontrollers and logic circuits to control actuators such as relays, motors, coils, LEDs, and valves. It is mainly used to amplify control signals and to interface microcontrollers with loads requiring more current than the microcontroller itself can provide.
Each channel supports up to 500 mA and 50 V, and thanks to built-in protection diodes, it allows safe control of inductive loads. Each channel can be treated as a current amplifier - a small input current (e.g., from a microcontroller pin) can control a much larger output current.
The ULN2803 is a solution that has remained indispensable for decades in automation, industry, robotics, and consumer electronics.
Built to last. Why is the ULN2803 still so popular?
Although Darlington transistor technology is no longer cutting-edge, the ULN2803 still holds a strong market position. Its reliability, simplicity, and versatility make designers choose it even when modern alternatives are available. The ULN2803 is one of those components that “just works”-from simple Arduino applications to industrial PLC controllers. It does not require additional components, special configurations, or high-current microcontrollers. It serves as a classic interface between logic and the power world-ideal for driving relays, motors, valves, LEDs, buzzers, etc. Compared to MOSFET drivers or dedicated driver ICs, the ULN2803 is much more resistant to design errors, voltage spikes, interference, or incorrect connections. In industrial applications, this is a major advantage.
Texas Instruments and Toshiba - the end of a classic in its original form
Two leading ULN2803 manufacturers-Texas Instruments and Toshiba—have discontinued their versions in the popular SOP-18 package. TI introduced a new ULN2803CDWR model in an SOP-20 package, while Toshiba withdrew the product entirely without offering a direct replacement in that format. In practice, this has forced many device manufacturers to modify PCB designs, even though they still need the original version of the chip. For many engineers and manufacturers, this meant unnecessary complications: a new package, layout changes, and updated documentation.
The Chinese response - the “Big Four” in the original SOP-18 format
Fortunately, the market does not tolerate a vacuum. Chinese manufacturers continue to offer fully functional ULN2803 chips in the original SOP-18 package, allowing production to continue without any design changes. It is the same chip, with the same functionality, but with greater availability, continuity of supply, and lower cost. Today, many manufacturers offer fully compatible ULN2803 devices in the original SOP-18 package. Micros, as an experienced distributor focused on the Chinese semiconductor market, has carefully selected four manufacturers distinguished by reliability, quality, and stable supply.
Thus, our “Big Four” was created: UMW, JSMICRO, XINLUDA, and SLKOR.
UMW - stability that convinces professionals
Chinese manufacturer UTD Semiconductor (brand UMW) is synonymous with consistency and quality, confirmed by the presence of its products in global distributors such as Digi-Key. Thanks to rigorous quality control and stable electrical parameters, UMW has earned a reputation as a reliable OEM component source for long-life projects.
JSMICRO - an encyclopedia of semiconductors
A brand with one of the broadest portfolios of clones of well-known components—from simple discrete elements to complex integrated circuits. This makes JSMICRO an excellent source of compatible replacements in nearly every component category.
XINLUDA - an integrated circuit specialist
XINLUDA focuses exclusively on IC production, allowing it to refine every detail and maintain a high level of reliability. In many cases, it is the only manufacturer offering a clone of specific chips, especially those that are hard to find or discontinued.
SLKOR - innovation, Chinese style
SLKOR combines the production of clones of well-known ICs with the development of its own proprietary semiconductor solutions. It represents a Chinese brand focused not only on compatibility but also on technological innovation. SLKOR products are also available through Digi-Key, confirming growing international trust. Each manufacturer in the “Big Four” has its strengths, but all share one thing—full compatibility with the classic ULN2803 in the SOP-18 package, proven quality, and stable supply. That is why Micros recommends these brands as the best choice for engineers, service technicians, and manufacturers who value production continuity, reasonable pricing, and reliability without modifying proven designs.
