Integrated Circuits

Integrated Circuits – What Are They Really?
Although the first integrated circuits appeared at the end of the 1950s, the key concepts that led to their construction began to be developed in the 1940s. Today, these components are ubiquitous, and almost everyone interacts continuously with devices that use them. Nearly all the most popular integrated circuits are based on silicon. Each of these components consists of many subcomponents, such as transistors and resistors, enclosed in a sealed package. Modern electronic integrated circuits are so complex that highly advanced equipment is required to manufacture them. Thanks to mass production, however, it is possible to create inexpensive components that can be successfully used both by electronics manufacturers and by electronics enthusiasts who want to build their own setups.
How Are Integrated Circuits Made?
The production of integrated circuits begins with their design. Since modern components can consist of millions of transistors, this process must be performed using computers. The appearance of the various stages of creating these components depends on the specific types of integrated circuits. We can distinguish monolithic integrated circuits, in which active and passive elements are made in a single-crystal semiconductor structure, and hybrid integrated circuits, which are produced by depositing and etching successive layers of conductor and resistive material. Currently, however, the first type described is much more popular. On the finished, sealed component, a symbol describing the integrated circuit is applied to allow identification.
