Multiplexers and Switches
In the world of digital electronics, efficient signal management is key. Multiplexers and switches act as intelligent “routers,” being advanced integrated circuits that allow multiple data streams to be transmitted through a single common transmission channel. This way of operation enables us to significantly reduce the number of wires in a circuit, which is especially important in complex and miniaturized projects.
What are multiplexers and switches and what are they used for?
A multiplexer is a device that selects one of many input signals and forwards it to a single output. Thanks to control (address) signals, the multiplexer works like a digital switch, allowing selective data routing. Understanding what a multiplexer is is important for anyone working with digital logic circuits. Knowing its specifics, we can greatly simplify and optimize many designs. Analog and digital switches, also available from Micros, extend the capabilities of multiplexers, enabling the management of both binary and analog signals (audio or video).
How do multiplexers work?
The operation of a multiplexer is based on the principles of digital logic, where address signals, i.e., control bits, determine which input is connected to the output. For example, in a simple circuit with one control bit, a multiplexer has two inputs and one output. And further:
- 2-bit multiplexer – has four inputs and selects one of them using two address bits;
- 4-bit multiplexer – allows selection from sixteen signals;
- 8-bit multiplexer – allows selection from as many as 256 signals.
In practice, the multiplexer and its diagram are represented as a series of logic gates, where input signals are switched to the output. Thanks to this, multiplexers are used in many areas, from data bus communications to memory systems, where one logical address must point to many physical locations.
What to consider when choosing the right multiplexer and switch?
When choosing multiplexers and switches, you should pay attention primarily to:
- number of channels – make sure the selected component offers enough inputs for your application;
- bandwidth – check whether the multiplexer is suitable for the frequency of your signals;
- on-state resistance – in the case of analog switches, the lower the resistance, the smaller the signal loss;
- package and mounting – choose a component with a package suitable for your project (e.g., SMD or THT).
