The base of potentiometer design is a resistive track. It is made from various materials, such as:

• plastic
• metal (in a wire form)
• cement

Resistance of the track is fixed and two terminals are connected to it. The third terminal however is connected to the slider which moves along the track through user manipulation. 

Potentiometer - electronic symbol and letter code

Every element of the electric circuit has its own symbol, thanks to which it can be marked on a diagram. When it comes to the potentiometer, it has the same symbol as the resistor. We can see here a rectangle arranged in a horizontal position. At both sides we can notice a line coming out from the centre of the geometrical shape at each side. In the case of the letter code and digital markings, it is a little more complicated. Individual manufacturers use different markings.
