What Exactly Are Thyristors?

If the anode has a negative potential relative to the cathode, the junction is reverse-biased. A small reverse current flows in the circuit established by the cathode and anode, with a magnitude of a few microamperes. Thyristors can operate like a standard reverse-biased diode. To do this, the external voltage must be increased until breakdown occurs. This allows the thyristor to enter a reverse or valve state.

Thyristors can be switched, changing their state from blocking to conducting when certain values of anode voltage and current are exceeded. The function of a specific thyristor depends on its type. For example, bidirectional thyristors are used to simplify power control in AC circuits. Although it is also the case that DC power, which also requires controllers, is controlled using thyristors.
