Resettable Fuses
Resettable fuses represent a specialized group of fuses that are distinguished primarily by their ability to be reset. A resettable fuse protects a circuit from the negative effects of overcurrent, but unlike traditional fuses, it does not get destroyed when it operates. Thus, the component does not need to be replaced each time the circuit experiences excessive current flow.
How Do Resettable Fuses Work?
The unique characteristics of resettable fuses are achieved through their construction. These components are made from a polymer material that normally has relatively low resistance. However, when an overcurrent condition occurs, the temperature of the fuse rises, causing the carbon connections to break. Once the current stops flowing, the component cools down, allowing it to return to its original operational mode.
How Many Operating Cycles Can Resettable Fuses Endure?
Resettable fuses are components that can protect a circuit from overcurrent multiple times. However, they have a defined number of operating cycles after which they will lose their effectiveness.
