What Is EPROM Memory?

EPROM is a type of non-volatile semiconductor memory used for reading data. Information is retained even when the integrated circuit is disconnected from power, distinguishing it from SRAM memory. The EPROM structure consists of a package and a silicon chip, which is the most important part of the memory. A unique feature of EPROM memory is the ability to erase stored data by exposing the chip to ultraviolet light. Depending on the circuit structure and components used, EPROM memory can be either erasable or one-time programmable, which can be programmed only once.

EEPROM vs. EPROM

This category also includes EEPROM memory. In this case, there is no need to expose the chip to ultraviolet light to erase stored data. Information can be electronically written and erased, with the ability to delete only selected elements stored in individual memory cells.

How EPROM Memory Works

The structure of EPROM memory allows data to be erased, but only for a limited number of cycles. This means that after exceeding these values, it will only be possible to read the information stored in EPROM cells. Typically, EPROM endures from one thousand to several thousand cycles, with a lifespan of approximately 10 years. After this period, it ceases to function and is no longer suitable for reprogramming.
