NTC Thermistor
An NTC thermistor is one of the electronic components that, despite relatively simple operating principles, performs a very important function in many devices. Because its resistance decreases as the temperature increases, it can be used, among other things, for measurement purposes.
What is an NTC thermistor?
An NTC thermistor is the most commonly used type of thermistor. Its function is appreciated both by manufacturers of many different devices and by enthusiasts who design their own electronic circuits. It is therefore not surprising that people learning electronics often encounter the symbol representing an NTC thermistor.
However, to understand the popularity of these components, it is first necessary to learn how they work. NTC thermistors, like other types of these components, change their resistance as the temperature increases. In the case of this particular type of component, the resistance decreases when the temperature rises. This behavior explains the abbreviation NTC in the name, which stands for negative temperature coefficient.
The described operating principle allows for very practical use of the NTC thermistor. Thanks to the properties of this component, it is possible to easily measure resistance and calculate the temperature based on it. For this purpose, formulas or special tables presenting specific values are used.
